The Neighborhood

As you may have guessed, we are not the only folks in the immediate area.  We have some wonderful neighbors around us.  They have been there for a short time or for generations.

Here is where you’ll meet them (if you’re not at the lake).

Lankenau Lodge

This is the current home of Bruce and Mindy (Pence) Lankenau.  According to Mindy, her grandparents, Bob and Dorothy Pence began coming to Yellow Creek lake in 1927 and camped at the Pioneer, swimming at the beach there.  In 1936 they bought the property where Mindy and Bruce now reside.

Here’s the “Pence Palace” in 1940.

Barbara Pence Overman (Mindy’s Aunt) shares with us...

“That is me with my high school sweetheart (Jerry Overman) in 1945. He was home on leave from the Navy and we became engaged then (have been married almost 61 years now).  He was then stationed on the carrier Hornet just a few weeks before the war ended.  He spent the next year or so bringing servicemen back from the Pacific theater in an operation called  ’Magic Carpet Duty’.”

Mindy continues...  “We tore the first cottage down in 1977 and built part of the cottage that still exists today, however - in 1996 we moved the cottage from the back of our lot to within 35 feet of the lakeshore - and added a large addition on at that time.”

New Cottage

Once the place is finished it was time to party!

Now it’s time for the annual boat parade.

“Yellow Creek is in my blood - it's where I was raised... it's where my father was raised, and it's where my children were raised.  My Grandson, Tyler is now the 5th generation of Pence's to spend time at Yellow Creek Lake.”  (Mindy Pence Lankenau, 2007)
